Invoicing in Switzerland — What Businesses Typically Include
The information below is a general overview of common invoicing practice in Switzerland. It is not legal or tax advice — consult a Treuhand or refer to the Federal Tax Administration at estv.admin.ch.
MwSt/TVA/IVA in Switzerland
Switzerland uses three official languages for its VAT system: MwSt (Mehrwertsteuer) in German, TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutee) in French, and IVA (imposta sul valore aggiunto) in Italian. The standard rate is 8.1% — significantly lower than EU rates. A reduced rate of 2.6% applies to food, medicine, newspapers, and books. A special rate of 3.8% applies to accommodation services. Businesses with annual taxable turnover above CHF 100,000 must register for MwSt/TVA with the Federal Tax Administration (FTA/ESTV).
UID Number and Tax Registration
Swiss businesses register with the commercial register (Handelsregister) and receive a UID (Unternehmens-Identifikationsnummer) — a unique identification number in the format CHE-123.456.789. MwSt-registered businesses append 'MWST' to this number on invoices. The UID replaced the old VAT numbers and is now the standard identifier for all Swiss business interactions with government authorities.
What a Swiss Invoice Must Include
Swiss MwSt law requires invoices to contain: your business name and address, your UID-MWST number, the customer's name and address, the invoice date and supply date, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the applicable MwSt rate and amount, and the total including MwSt. For invoices under CHF 400, a simplified format is permitted. Switzerland's QR-bill system is increasingly used for domestic payments, though traditional bank transfers remain common.
Freelancing in Switzerland
Switzerland has a large self-employed (selbststandigerwerbend) population, particularly in consulting, financial services, technology, and creative industries. Swiss freelancers benefit from the country's central European location, multilingual workforce, and strong international business connections. Many Swiss freelancers invoice clients in CHF domestically and in EUR, USD, or GBP for international work — BooInvoice's multi-currency support makes this straightforward.
