Invoicing in Portugal — What Businesses Typically Include
The information below is a general overview of common invoicing practice in Portugal. It is not legal or tax advice — consult an accountant or refer to the Autoridade Tributaria at portaldasfinancas.gov.pt.
IVA (VAT) in Portugal
Portugal's standard IVA (Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado) rate is 23% on mainland Portugal. The Azores and Madeira autonomous regions have lower rates of 16% and 22% respectively. Reduced rates of 13% and 6% apply to certain goods and services. All businesses performing taxable activities must register for IVA with the Autoridade Tributaria (AT). Portugal has no VAT registration threshold — all businesses making taxable supplies must register, though very small businesses may benefit from the simplified regime.
NIF and Tax Registration
Every individual and business in Portugal has a NIF (Numero de Identificacao Fiscal) — a nine-digit tax identification number. For EU cross-border transactions, the Portuguese VAT number is PT followed by the NIF. The NIF must appear on all invoices and commercial documents. Portuguese tax administration is managed through the Portal das Financas, which handles online tax returns and business registrations.
What a Portuguese Invoice (Fatura) Must Include
Portuguese tax law has strict invoicing requirements. A valid fatura must contain: your business name, address, and NIF, the customer's name, address, and NIF (for B2B Portuguese transactions), a unique sequential invoice number from certified invoicing software, the invoice date and supply date, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the IVA rate and amount, and the total including IVA. Portugal requires that all invoices above EUR 1,000 to Portuguese consumers or businesses include the customer's NIF.
Digital Nomads and Freelancing in Portugal
Portugal has become one of Europe's most popular destinations for digital nomads and remote workers, supported by the D7 and Digital Nomad visas. Lisbon and Porto have thriving startup ecosystems and significant freelance communities in technology, design, and creative industries. Portugal's NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime — while recently reformed — has attracted many international professionals. BooInvoice supports EUR alongside USD, GBP, and other currencies for Portuguese freelancers invoicing both domestic and international clients.
