Invoicing in Finland — What Businesses Typically Include

The information below is a general overview of common invoicing practice in Finland. It is not legal or tax advice — consult an accountant or refer to Verohallinto at vero.fi.

ALV (VAT) in Finland

Finland's standard ALV (arvonlisavero) rate is 25.5% — recently increased from 24% in September 2024, making it one of the highest standard VAT rates in the EU. Reduced rates of 14% apply to food and restaurant services, and 10% applies to books, medicines, public transport, and accommodation. Businesses with annual turnover above EUR 15,000 must register for ALV with Verohallinto (the Finnish Tax Administration).

Y-tunnus and VAT Number

Finnish businesses register with the Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and the Tax Administration and receive a Y-tunnus (business ID) in the format 1234567-8. Your Finnish VAT number is FI followed by your Y-tunnus without the hyphen. Both should appear on invoices. Finland has very high levels of business transparency — company information is publicly searchable through the YTJ (Business Information System).

What a Finnish Invoice (Lasku) Must Include

Finnish ALV law requires invoices to include: your business name, address, and Y-tunnus, your ALV registration number, the customer's name and address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date and supply date, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the ALV rate and amount, and the total including ALV. Finland has one of the highest rates of e-invoicing adoption in Europe — many Finnish businesses prefer to receive invoices electronically through the Finvoice standard.

Freelancing in Finland

Finland has a growing freelance and self-employment community, particularly in technology (Finland is home to major tech companies and a strong startup ecosystem), design, and professional services. Finnish freelancers operate as toiminimiyrittaja (sole traders) or through a limited company (osakeyhtio). Finland's excellent digital infrastructure and high English proficiency make international freelancing common — BooInvoice supports EUR alongside other currencies for Finnish freelancers invoicing globally.
