Invoicing in Belgium — What Businesses Typically Include
The information below is a general overview of common invoicing practice in Belgium. It is not legal or tax advice — consult an accountant or refer to the SPF Finances at finances.belgium.be.
BTW/TVA in Belgium
Belgium's standard BTW (belasting over de toegevoegde waarde) / TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutee) rate is 21%. Reduced rates of 12% apply to certain food products served in restaurants and social housing, and 6% applies to basic necessities, water supply, and renovation of older buildings. Belgium has no VAT registration threshold — all businesses making taxable supplies must register from their first transaction with the SPF Finances (Service Public Federal Finances) or FOD Financien (Federale Overheidsdienst Financien).
Enterprise Number and VAT Number
Belgian businesses register with the Banque-Carrefour des Entreprises (BCE) / Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen (KBO) and receive an enterprise number (numero d'entreprise / ondernemingsnummer) in the format BE 0XXX.XXX.XXX. This same number, prefixed with BE, serves as your BTW/TVA identification number. Both the enterprise number and VAT number must appear on all invoices and commercial documents.
What a Belgian Invoice Must Include
Belgian tax law requires invoices to contain: your business name, address, and enterprise/VAT number, the customer's name, address, and VAT number (for B2B), a unique sequential invoice number, the invoice date and supply date, a description of goods or services, the unit price and quantity, the net amount, the BTW/TVA rate and amount for each line, and the total including BTW/TVA. Belgium has specific rules about invoice numbering — numbers must be sequential with no gaps.
Freelancing in Belgium
Belgium has a significant freelance community, with many professionals operating as zelfstandige (self-employed) individuals or through a management company (managementvennootschap). Belgium's complex tax system — involving federal, regional, and communal taxes — makes accurate invoicing particularly important. Brussels, as the de facto capital of the EU, hosts a large international business community where English is widely used in professional contexts. BooInvoice supports EUR alongside other currencies for Belgian freelancers invoicing international clients.
