Invoicing in Austria — What Businesses Typically Include

The information below is a general overview of common invoicing practice in Austria. It is not legal or tax advice — consult a Steuerberater or refer to the Bundesministerium fur Finanzen at bmf.gv.at.

Umsatzsteuer (USt) in Austria

Austria's standard Umsatzsteuer (USt) rate is 20%. Reduced rates of 13% apply to cultural events, live animals, and plants, and 10% applies to food, books, public transport, accommodation, and pharmaceutical products. Businesses with annual turnover above EUR 35,000 must register for USt with their local Finanzamt. The Kleinunternehmerregelung (small business exemption) allows businesses below this threshold to opt out of charging USt.

UID-Nummer and Tax Registration

Austrian businesses receive a Steuernummer from their local Finanzamt. For intra-EU transactions, businesses need a UID-Nummer (Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummer) beginning with ATU followed by 8 digits. The UID-Nummer is required for cross-border EU invoicing. Businesses register through FinanzOnline, Austria's electronic tax administration portal, which is widely used for filing returns and managing tax obligations.

What an Austrian Invoice (Rechnung) Must Include

Austrian tax law requires invoices to include: your business name and address, your Steuernummer or UID-Nummer, the customer's name and address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date and supply date, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the USt rate and amount, and the total including USt. For invoices under EUR 400, a simplified invoice (Kleinbetragsrechnung) with fewer requirements is permitted. Austrian invoices must be retained for 7 years.

Freelancing in Austria

Austria has a growing freelance community, with many professionals working as Einzelunternehmer (sole traders) or through a GmbH (limited company). Vienna in particular has a thriving creative, technology, and consulting freelance scene. Austria's central European location and strong DACH (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) business connections mean that many Austrian freelancers invoice clients across the German-speaking region — BooInvoice supports EUR alongside CHF and other currencies for cross-border work.
